Dental crowns are tooth-shaped caps that dentists like Dr. Osga place over natural teeth to protect them from damage or improve their appearance. In modern dentistry, they are often made of advanced dental porcelain that near-perfectly resembles natural enamel. Dental crowns can also be attached to dental implants to replace lost teeth.

Common Crown Uses

Smiling Lady

Cosmetic Upgrades

If you have a natural tooth that is deeply stained, cracked, or otherwise imperfect, Dr. Osga can cover that tooth with a porcelain crown, resulting in a brighter, more complete smile. Dr. Osga also offers porcelain veneers, which can be used to achieve similar results in some cases.

After Root Canal Therapy

Perhaps the most common use of dental crowns is to protect teeth that have been treated with root canal therapy. If you have an infected tooth, Dr. Osga can perform a root canal to remove the infected tissue from the tooth, and then he will place a crown to keep the tooth strong and healthy.

Replace Missing Teeth

If you have lost a natural tooth, Dr. Osga can place a dental implant at his office in Henderson, NV. Once the implant has integrated with the jawbone, he can attach a crown to the implant. Dr. Osga is a member of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry.

How Are Dental Crowns Placed?

Tooth Preparation

Teeth need to be reshaped before they can receive dental crowns. Depending on your situation, our dentist may also have to remove decay or infected tissue from your tooth. Dr. Osga will be as gentle and precise as possible when removing tissue from your tooth. He will apply a local anesthetic, and nervous patients can take advantage of our sedation options.

Imaging

Once your treated tooth has been prepared, Dr. Osga will use our digital imaging technology to create a 3-D digital model of your bite. Because we use digital impressions, you won't have to bite into uncomfortable dental putty. After capturing the images of your teeth, Dr. Osga will place a temporary crown over your treated tooth.

Lab Fabrication

Dr. Osga will send the digital scans of your bite to a trusted local dental lab. At the lab, skilled technicians will reference the model of your teeth to craft a crown that will fit precisely in your smile. Our partners at the lab make crowns out of dental porcelain and other natural-looking materials. This process takes about 10 days, but because you'll have a temporary crown, there will be no gap in your smile.

Permanent Crown

Once your permanent crown has been created, you will return to our Henderson office so that Dr. Osga can attach it. During this procedure, he will remove your temporary crown and secure the permanent crown with dental cement. The result is a restored smile and a complete, functional smile.

Dental Crowns FAQs

Are crowns covered by insurance?

Your dental insurance coverage will depend on why you are receiving the crown. If you need a crown to protect a damaged tooth, that will likely be partially or fully covered. If you want a crown for purely cosmetic reasons, however, that will not be covered. At Carepoint Dental, we can help you understand your insurance coverage.

What are dental crowns made of?

Historically, crowns have been made of all sorts of materials, including nickel, gold, porcelain, and porcelain-fused-to-metal. At Carepoint Dental, we typically use crowns made of porcelain or advanced materials like IPS e.max®, which is extremely durable and lifelike.

How do I care for my dental crown?

You should care for your dental crown the same way you care for your natural teeth. Brush and floss every day, and visit our dentist at least twice a year for a regular check-up. Bad habits like biting your nails or chewing on pens can put excessive wear and tear on your crown, so do your best to limit these behaviors.

How long do crowns last?

With proper maintenance, a dental crown can easily remain in place for 10 years or longer. When a crown does break or wear out, replacing it is a relatively simple dental procedure. If you ever have any issues with your crown, give our dentistry practice a call right away. We will do everything we can to meet with you as soon as possible and resolve the issue.

Wow...what an amazing office, starting with office manager Anna, who greets you by name as soon as you walk in the door.  Dr. Osga is super friendly, gentle and very knowledgeable. He takes time to explain everything to you and makes sure you are very comfortable during the whole process. He really cares about customers well-being and doesn't recommend dental work that doesn't benefit customer long term. Whole staff is amazing including dental hygienist Cheyenne, they treat you like a family from the minute you walk. Thank you Dr. Osga & team.
