Man with tooth pain

Root Canal

If bacteria and decay reach the soft inner tissue of a tooth, it can cause pain and eventually lead to tooth loss.

Dr. Aaron Osga offers root canal therapy at our Henderson, NV, dental practice to eliminate the infection and save your tooth.

You may be wondering: Is a root canal painful?

So What Is A Root Canal?

A root canal refers to the procedure used to treat infection located in the "root canals," which are the centers of the tooth roots, as well as other areas within the tooth. We create a small opening to access the pulp chamber (the inner portion of the tooth) and extract the infected nerves, ligaments, and blood vessels (pulp). Once the tooth has been emptied of the pulp and disinfected, we can provide the necessary restorative services.
Dental infection is treated by opening a hole in the tooth, removing infected tissue, filling tooth canals with rubber-like material, placing the filling (with an optional post), then finally placing a dental crown
Our Henderson dental office makes root canal treatment virtually painless.

Don't Delay Treatment

When it comes to root canal therapy, it's best to undergo treatment sooner rather than later. This not only helps you achieve prompt relief, but can also prevent the need for extraction and the spread of the infection. To put it another way, fast action can help you avoid the need for more complex and expensive restorative procedures. So don't delay - schedule your root canal treatment at Carepoint Dental today. You can reach our Henderson, NV, office online, or by calling:

Types of Dental Restorations

After root canal treatment, we will need to support your natural tooth with a protective restoration. Our Henderson, NV, practice offers two main options:

Filling

Filling

In order to reach the pulp of an infected tooth, we need to create a small opening in the tooth surface. A filling may provide a sufficient restoration in some cases. Our practice offers natural tooth-colored fillings that are custom-matched to the shade of your enamel for the most aesthetically pleasing final results. It is important to understand that in many cases, a tooth that has undergone a root canal will need more substantial support than a filling alone can provide.

Crown

Dental Crown

Our dentist may recommend a crown to cover the entire tooth after a root canal. In some instances, we can provide a permanent crown right away, but other cases might require a temporary crown while your permanent crown is crafted offsite. Our Henderson practice works with an outstanding lab that will craft your custom dental crown. You can trust that your restoration will be skillfully crafted to look entirely natural among surrounding teeth.

What To Expect During Root Canal Treatment

Dental Exam

We begin treatment by taking x-rays and thoroughly examining your teeth. If you are in need of a root canal, we will discuss your treatment options and plan the procedure.

Anesthetic

On the day of your procedure, we start by numbing your teeth and gums. If you desire, we can also provide sedation for further relaxation.

Root Canal

Our dentist will create a small access point in the outer layer of the infected tooth to access the inner chamber. The pulp is removed and the root canals and pulp chamber are sterilized.

Filling

Next, we will fill the empty pulp chamber with a rubber-like material. Depending on the size of the cavity and the condition of your tooth, we may first insert a post for additional support.

Restoration

Finally, we seal the tooth and attach a restoration to protect the tooth structure. If we cannot provide a permanent crown right away, we can take impressions of your tooth and provide a temporary crown at this time. The impressions will be sent to our partner lab, where your permanent crown will be made.

Root Canal FAQs

Are There Any Alternatives to a Root Canal?

Unfortunately, once bacteria and decay reach the pulp of a tooth, a root canal is the only way to address the problem without extracting the tooth. An extraction will leave you with a gap in your smile, which is more expensive to treat.

Do I Need an Endodontist to Perform a Root Canal?

You do not have to go to an endodontist to get a root canal. Dr. Osga has the education and experience needed to offer safe root canal therapy, so you can undergo all the steps of treatment conveniently at our Henderson office.

What Are the Risks of Treatment?

Like all dental procedures, root canal treatment does involve some risks. While rare, potential risks include re-infection. However, Carepoint Dental reduces the risk of complications by using the safest modern practices. Root canals performed with these contemporary techniques have a success rate of over 97%.

How long will the results of my root canal last?

With proper maintenance and dental hygiene, your treated tooth can last a lifetime. Remember, root canal treatment does not prevent a future cavity or infection, so make sure to brush and floss your teeth daily, and visit the dentist for regular checkups. You also need to maintain the restoration that protects your treated tooth. Dental crowns can last about 10 years before needing replacement.
